To serve this market, BSIDE is doing a few things differently.

We provide a turnkey solution for ADUs and small homes.

We manage everything from design, through financing, permitting, and construction. We do so while innovating and never compromising on four things:

Transparency

We are committed to transparency. As we seek to innovate on how to make our homes as durable and affordable as possible, we promise to share all the numbers with you.

Sustainability

There are many definitions for this, but to BSIDE that means energy efficiency, durability, and careful resource use. All our homes will be built with super-insulated panels and will minimize the use of plastics beyond what is used for air-sealing and insulation.

ADU Construction Efficiency

We are eliminating extraneous costs wherever possible. Pre-engineering, panelizing, self-performing, and creative phase management are examples of how we are making our backyard homes as affordable as possible.

Affordable Housing

BSIDE is working with partners to offer subsidies and grants that will flow directly to your project if you commit to renting your new home at an affordable rate. Our current campaign is to build backyard homes for Veterans at Risk of Homelessness. Click here to learn more.

We hope you will join us in saying:

Yes, In My Backyard!

What is a “backyard home”?

BSIDE was created to help solve a critical need for affordable housing in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.

By that measure alone we are not unique.

Where we are unique is in our laser-like focus on small home plans and backyards as the most promising solution to our region’s housing problem.

Backyard homes (commonly called ADUs or “granny flats”) can create new homes at a time when there is critically short supply. But unlike other types of new homes, they also build:

Generational Wealth

…for existing homeowners and small builders. A backyard home is an investment in the value of your own property, in a market where property values have been growing rapidly.

Monthly Cashflow from Rental Housing

If carefully designed, financed, and built, a backyard home will generate monthly rental income for homeowners.

Savings for Municipalities

With a backyard home, there is no need for cities or counties to build expensive new infrastructure like roads, sidewalks, and utilities.

Multi-Generational and Accessible Housing for Seniors and People with Disabilities

…who can save money and maintain independence while being close to family, friends, backyard gardens, and the neighborhoods they love.

Resiliency for our Communities

Local homeowners using their land to help others have secure housing options is a decentralized and grassroots approach to solving our housing crisis.
