The Right to Affordable Housing.

ADUs for Veterans.

BSIDE Homes is committed to making backyard homes as affordable as possible.

Our current initiative is partnering with VOANS to provide rental homes for veterans at risk of homelessness in Durham, NC.  This severely underserved population has a critical need for safe housing.

The cost of housing in Durham has risen dramatically in the last ten years, and while many apartment construction projects are underway, few of them are designed to serve the most at-risk residents.  BSIDE is working with VOANS to identify caring families across Durham, whose backyards can be the site for new rental homes for veterans at risk of homelessness. In return, VOANS has committed to giving money to help offset the cost of building these homes.

We are selecting six Durham, NC homeowners for this program. If you would like to be considered, please fill out the form below and we will follow-up over email or phone to tell you more.

BSIDE Affordability Initiatives.

ADUs for Veterans is just the first in a series of affordability strategies that BSIDE is pursuing. We are also looking into grants for other rental types, homeowner incentive payments and neighborhood-based re-investment loan funds.

As a way to better understand the barriers that exist to the more widespread use of backyard space for new affordable housing in the form of accessory dwelling units (ADUs), we completed a series of focus group conversations in neighborhoods across Durham.

The focus group goals were: 1) Identify what benefits of building ADUs most resonate with homeowners; 2) Identify common barriers that prevent homeowners from building ADUs; and 3) Test the concept of incentivizing homeowners to build ADUs for at-risk populations, such as veterans at risk of homelessness.  A summary of that research and resulting recommendations is available for download here.
